Bristol, TN | Home of Friendship Ford
Friendship Ford serves customers from a number of surrounding cities and communities in Tennessee and Virginia, but most of our customers come from right here in Bristol, TN, the Birthplace of Country Music.
Bristol is home to more than 26,000 people, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, and is the twin city of Bristol, VA. The two Bristols share a common downtown district, with State Street acting as the boundary between the two states. Bristol, TN, however, is the larger of the two twins, both in population (Bristol, VA, is home to slightly fewer than 18,000 people) and land area (29.5 square miles to 13.2 square miles).
Bristol was officially recognized as the Birthplace of Country Music by the U.S. Congress in 1998. Some of the first commercial recordings of country music took place in Bristol in 1927, when Victor Talking Machine Company producer Ralph Peer came here to record Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family and others. The Bristol sessions, as they came to be known, yielded some 76 recordings from 19 performers, and were America's introduction to what would become modern country music. The Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion takes place the third weekend in September each year to celebrate Bristol's musical heritage.
Bristol is also home to Bristol Motor Speedway, the fourth largest sports venue in America and eighth largest in the world, with a capacity of up to 165,000 people. The half-mile oval (0.533 miles, to be exact) hosts two 500-lap Sprint Cup Series races annually: the Food City 500, typically held in late March or early April on a Saturday afternoon; and the immensely popular Irwin Tools Night Race, held in late August on a Saturday night and considered the toughest ticket in NASCAR to obtain. The speedway also hosts a number of other NASCAR events throughout the season that are widely attended, as well as NHRA, ASA and USAR events.
